Province Rejects Revised Green Line Plan Says Funding To Be Withheld

Province Rejects Revised Green Line Plan, Funding to be Withheld

Revised Green Line Plan Deemed Inadequate, Funding Withdrawn

Calgary –

The Alberta government has rejected the revised plan for the Green Line light-rail transit project in Calgary, announcing that provincial funding for the project will be withheld until a more satisfactory proposal is submitted.

The decision was made after the province reviewed the revised plan, which was submitted by the City of Calgary in response to concerns raised by the province about the original plan.

Province Expresses Concerns About Revised Plan

In a statement, Alberta Transportation Minister Ric McIver said that the revised plan "does not adequately address the concerns that were raised by the province" and that the province "cannot support a project that does not meet our expectations."

The province's concerns include the cost of the project, the ridership projections, and the environmental impact.

City of Calgary Disappointed by Decision

The City of Calgary expressed disappointment with the province's decision, with Mayor Jyoti Gondek saying that the city "has worked hard to develop a plan that meets the needs of our city and our province."

The city is now considering its options, including the possibility of appealing the province's decision.

Funding Essential for Project to Proceed

The provincial funding is essential for the Green Line project to proceed. The project is expected to cost around $5.5 billion, and the province has committed to providing $1.5 billion in funding.

Without the provincial funding, the city will not be able to proceed with the project.

Green Line Project Faces Uncertain Future

The rejection of the revised Green Line plan leaves the future of the project uncertain. The city will need to either revise the plan again or find another way to secure funding for the project.

The Green Line project has been in the planning stages for over a decade, and its rejection is a major setback for the city of Calgary.
